Rankings: Top 5 Heavyweights

1. Cain Velasquez

As UFC Heavyweight Champion, Velasquez is the undisputed #1 Heavyweight in the world. Coming off of a successful surgery and currently recovering, Velasquez will face the winner of the Junior Dos Santos vs Brock Lesnar fight. Having already beat Lesnar and displaying very well-rounded skills, Velasquez should not have a problem with either opponent to retain his Heavyweight Gold.

2. Alistair Overeem

Strikeforce Champion, DREAM Champion and K-1 World Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion are held by one man, Alistair Overeem. Upon a quick dispatch of former UFC star Todd Duffee, Alistair Overeem will attempt to avenge a loss to legend-killer; Fabricio Werdum. If all goes according to plan, Overeem will add the title of Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion to his list of accolades in 2011.

3. Junior Dos Santos

Thus far undefeated in the UFC, Junior Dos Santos is set to take on Brock Lesnar in the organizations return to Vancouver, Canada. With victories over Fabricio Werdum, Mirko Cro Cop and Roy Nelson, Dos Santos will face his biggest threat yet after a coaching stint on The Ultimate Fighter.

4. Brock Lesnar

With wins over Randhy Couture, Frank Mir, Heath Herring and Shane Carwin, former WWE star Brock Lesnar has tasted gold inside the octagon and looks to have the strap around his waist again. The only obstacle in his way is Junior Dos Santos. Will Lesnar's inability to take a punch be cured by the time these two mammoths steop into the cage? Only time will tell.

5. Shane Carwin

With only one loss in his professional career coming at the hands of Brock Lesnar, this wrecking machine looks to get back in the octagon follwoing a career altering back injury. With a laundry list of first round knockouts, this Heavyweight badass is expected to come back with a bang. But will his gas tank get him through it?

Fighting Back: UFC 127 Post Event Analysis

From the main event draw to undercard judging controversy, UFC 127 was an exciting show that left Australian MMA fans wanting more.

Most Upsetting Victory:
In a fight that most saw as a warm-up fight for Australian mixed martial artist George Sotiropoulos, an incredible performance by Dutch kickboxing king Dennis Siver made for the most upsetting victory of the night. For many MMA fans, Sotiropoulos was going to walk through Siver, take him down and strangle him. Siver didn't see it happening this way.

With a strong start and crushing takedown defense, Siver fought off all of G-Sots' attempts to take the fight to the ground and impose his submission game. It's hard to see what will be next for Siver but matchups with Jim Miller, Ben Henderson or Clay Guida may put him in the top of the division and in line for a much deserved title shot.

Least Impressive Attitude in Victory:
Michael 'The Count' Bisping put his trash talking opponent away after two rounds of back and forth brawling. As many fans expected, The Count's more technical striking won him the fight, but what occured afterwards wouldn't garner him as much respect.

Following his victory, Bisping approached his opponent's corner and spat in their direction, he then proceeded to shout at the downed Rivera, telling him to apologize for his pre-fight antics. Bisping had the perfect opportunity to look like the good guy against a big-mouthed opponent, but after screaming homophobic slurs at the UFC Live weigh-ins and his post fight performance, the British mixed martial artist blew his chance. Really unfortunate for such a talented fighter.

Gladdest to See Win:
Mark Hunt is a difficult fighter to rank, his victory at UFC 127 is his first in years, but barring his matchup with Sean McCorkle, the Kiwi has fought a laundry list of the best heavyweights in the world including Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop and Josh Barnett. It was really good to see Hunt win in such impressive fashion (Knock-out of the Night Candidate) even if it was against a less than impressive opponent. Regardless of the victory, Hunt shouldn't be relevant in the Heavyweight division anytime soon.

Biggest Judging Error:
Riki Fukuda should be contacting Sydney Police as he was robbed by judges in his fight against Canadian Nick 'The Promise' Ring at UFC 127. Throughtout the fight, Fukuda controlled the stand-up and secured powerful takedowns in what most saw as a Unanimous Decision victory performance. That was however not the case.

Judges scored the fight 29-28 unanimously for Nick Ring in what should serve as a lesson to Athletic Commisions everywhere on what NOT to do.

Strangest Wardrobe Choice:
In a performance that proved him to be not only a seasoned veteran, but a worthy adversary, Brian Ebersole shaved an arrow in his body hair, the length of his torso pointing towards his face. Perhaps this served him well as he controlled Chris Lytle for the length of the fight. If it worked as a distraction, it was a well-served strategy and if not, it was a damn fine fashion statement.

Most Deserving of a Step-Up in Competition
Swedish Light-Heavyweight, Alexander Gustafsson has been an unstoppable force against low-level competition, with his only loss coming to top-prospect Phil Davis. Now 11-1 in his MMA career and 3-1 in the UFC, it is well deserving to give Gustafsson an opponent of some name recognition. If Jon Jones can get a title shot, Gustafsson certainly deserves a Main Card slot.

With consistent and entertaining victories - all but 1 by way of submission or TKO - expect the Swedish prospect top earn fights against top competition in late 2011. Noguiera, Brilz, Franklin or Machida could all serve as catapults for this young up-and-comers light-heavyweight run.

Chael Sonnen: A True American Hero

Some may know the story of Chael Sonnen, a tale of UFC Middleweight glory, defeat and the ultimate rude awakening, however, for those who don't know, allow me to educate you.

.Chael Sonnen: The Man

Chael Patrick Sonnen was born an only child, April 3, 1977 to a young Republican couple in the beautiful town of West Linn, Oregon. Chael's father was a man's man; a hard working blue collar man that at times sacrificed his health to supply his own family with the luxuries they deserved. His mother on the other hand is a lovely youthful woman, reminiscent of a woman of the 50's, honest, pure and housebroken. It was this household that would thrust young Chael into the world of wrestling.

From a young age, little Chael was a fan of the Hulk Hogans and Macho Men of the world; and always strived to apply pure athleticism to the entertainment of a crowd. Young Chael was only an elementary school student when he joined his first wrestling team. Running into the hard work would be a lot to handle for the young boy, but, his character was developing and he liked the man he was becoming. His earliest years in wrestling were difficult and centered around the fundamental aspects of the complicated sport, he had the support of both his parents and the guidance of a tremendous wrestling instructor. Though a star athlete, little Chael was keen to keeping to himself and didn't have many other friends, but, from the morals his father taught him, the friends Chael did have, were the best friends in the world.

Upon entry into competitive wrestling (Greco Roman), Chael became an instant standout promoting his rank to NCAA Division 1 All American through his formative years at the University of Oregon. During this time he also accomplished the feat of University National champion in Greco Roman. His years at the University of Oregon were more than just a launch for his outstanding career in amateur wrestling, but, they created the elements of a great man. Through the University of Oregon, Chael Sonnen earned his Real Estate License and found an interest in the political realm. It was in politics more than anywhere that he truly stood out as a straight talker and an honest good old fashioned Republican.

.Chael Sonnen: The Fighter

At the young age of 19, while still a youth, Chael Sonnen accepted an offer to apply his lengthy wrestling career to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). It was, 1997 and the sport was still new to most people, though Sonnen had been introduced to it through training partners Dan Henderson, Matt Lindland and Randy Couture - founders of Team Quest. The teenage Sonnen faced a man named Ben Hailey and won the match in Vancouver, Washington via Unaniomous Decision. This would be his only professional MMA match until March of 2002.

Chael Sonnen would take time off from training for MMA to develop his wrestling skills for the United States Olympic team. He successfully made the team as an alternate and it is here as well as his political life that Chael would mimic his best friend and fellow fighter, Matt Lindland.

As a fighter, Chael Sonnen has developed extremely unorthodox, yet effective striking. He is known best for utilizing leg kicks as a boxer would utilize a jab. He uses the lead outside leg kick to create distance and set-up his left straight, a punch that he would drop Pound for Pound king and UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva with. Upon establishing his leg kick and applying his boxing Sonnen would use his Greco Roman background in takedowns, typically using the double leg takedown to subdue his opponent on the mat. Once pinning his opponent to the mat, Sonnen is known for transitioning to dominant positions and 'ground and pounding' his opponents, until submission or doctor stoppage. Sonnen does not have a highly developed jiu-jitsu game and therefore has in the past had trouble passing guard on highly ranked jiu jitsu black belts. In these situations he is best known for laying in his opponents guard and using punches and elbow strikes to attack his opponent. Unfortunately for Sonnen, this method of attack is very risky and has at times led to Sonnen himself being submitted.

Chael Sonnen has fought a laundry list of the best athletes in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions (184-205 lbs). These names include Forrest Griffin, Nate Marquardt, Paulo Filho, Anderson Silva, Demian Maia, Dan Miller, Jason 'Mayhem' Miller, Jeremy Horn, Trevor Prangly and Japanese standout Yushin Okami. Sonnen has competed all over the world and competed for both the WEC and UFC Middleweight Championships.

.The Downfall of an American Icon

For Chael Sonnen, the life of a fighter is sometimes harder than getting in the gym and training. In 2008, Sonnen was diagnosed with hypogonadism, this disorder involves dangerously low levels of testerone production in the body and does not allow the body to enter puberty. As instructed by physicians, Chael injected pure testosterone into his body so he would be able to compete at a high level in the sport. This would ultimately be his downfall.

On August 7, 2010, Chael Sonnen faced UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Sonnen dominated the fight for 4 and a half rounds before succumbing to a triangle choke-arm bar combination. This loss broke the heart of the young American Hero, but what happened after would destroy his every dream.

The California State Athletic Commission suspended Sonnen for 6 months after his loss to Anderson Silva. They cited abnormally high levels of testosterone as the reason for the ruling. After arranging a hearing with the commission, at which Sonnen was ridiculed and teased by a commission attorney, Chael looked forward to his return to MMA against Yoshihiro Akiyama. Not so fast.

On January 3, 2011 Chael Sonnen pled guilty to charges of money laundering and mortgage fraud indefinitely putting his MMA career on hold. It is expected that Sonnen has agreed to cooperate with investigators reducing his possible sentence from 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine to a more appropriate 2 years probation and $10,000 fine. Through this difficult time in Sonnen's life he has made no public comment and remains away from media. The UFC has froze Sonnen's contract and expects him to return to his Middleweight title run as soon as his legal and personal issues have been attended to.

Sonnen is currently awaiting the court's final ruling on his money laundering charge and anxiously awaiting his UFC return.

UFC on VERSUS: Sanchez vs Kampmann

Diego Sanchez vs Martin Kampmann

26 year old Diego Sanchez is one of the best fighters in the UFC, he is 24-4 with his only losses coming by Decision to John Hathaway (in his re-debut at welterweight), Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck. Sanchez has also lost to perrenial contender and former lightweight champion BJ Penn by way of a nasty cut on his forehead. Sanchez is a wrestler and energizer bunny hybrid led by Greg Jackson of Albuquerque, New Mexico - a camp regarded and proven to be one of the most successful in modern MMA.

Sanchez style is extremely fast paced and he uses his strikes to set-up takedowns. Both his striking and takedowns are sporadic and largely ineffective. According to UFC.com Diego Sanchez has been successful on only 20% of his takedowns and 39% of his strikes (half of those being on the ground). So if Diego can get The Hitman to the ground, he may be able to use his ground and pound to stop the fight or earn the Decision.

Kampmann on the other hand is a Danish champion thai kickboxer that has recently come out of nowhere in a storm of welterweight glory. His most recent loss to #1 contender Jake Shields' notwithstanding. At 17-4 Kampmann has faced top competition including bouts at Middleweight against Nate Marquardt and Jake Shields. Kampmann's last fight, a split decision loss to one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world (Jake Shields) displayed his ability to stop takedowns and grapple with a ADCC Bronze Medalist.

With Kampmann's striking ability (landing 50% of standing strikes) and takedown defense (stopping 76%), Diego Sanchez will have the hardest fight of his life ahead of him. The only concern is Martin Kampmann's willingness to let his hands fly. As we saw in the Shield's fight, The Hitman can at times be reluctant to showcase his world class striking.

My Pick: Kampmann via Decision
Result: Diego Sanchez via Unanimous Decision

C.B Dollaway vs Mark Munoz

C.B. Dollaway is an Arizona State wrestling alum with a wealthy submission arsenal. He will be facing heavy handed Phillipino Mark Munoz.

Dollaway will have a 5 inch reach advantage over Munoz and a definite advantage in the wrestling department as Munoz has moved his camp to Blackhouse (a camp not known for it's wrestling pedigree). I think this matchup will come down to a well established jab and lead leg kick setting up takedowns for Dollaway.

Munoz most recently lost to Yushin Okami before defeating Aaron Simpson, a former coach of Dollaway. C.B. is on a 3 fight win streak against low-tier competition. Although his competition has been less difficult he has been fighting knock-out artists, much like his current competition.

My Pick: Dollaway via Submission (Bonus: Arm Bar in 1st Round)
Result: Mark Munoz via TKO

Alessio Sakara vs Chris Weidman

This main card fight will feature the Italian 'Legionarius' vs American Chris Weidman. This is a classic David and Goliath matchup pitting a rookie professional in Chris Weidman against UFC and MMA veteran Sakara.

Sakara will have a definite advantage in the standup as a fighter that lands nearly half of his strikes and avoids 3/4 of attempted strikes against him. He is also a decent grappler with a proven ability to take opponents down when necessary and transition to dominant positions on the ground. However, the most important factor in this matchup will be Sakara's ability to stop the takedown. The Italian has a recorded takedown defense rate of 73% according to UFC.com. Against the all-american wrestler, that will prove to be pivotal.

Weidman is a new opponent having a record of only 4-0 in MMA and never competing against any notable opponents. Having successfully won and defended the Ring of Combat Middleweight Championship Belt won't prove to be a seriosu accomplishment against the much more experienced Sakara. Weidman is a well-rounded fighter but primarily a grappler.

I feel Sakara's ability to keep the fight standing will result in a 4th straight victory and a move-up in competition.

My Pick: Alessio Sakara via Submission

Result: Chris Weidman via Unanimous Decision

UNDERCARD LOCKS!!!

Here you can have a couple quick picks to supplement the Main Card wagers

Joe Stevenson vs Danny Castillo

My Pick: Joe Stevenson via Submission (Bonus: Guillotine Choke)

Result: Danny Castillo via Unanimous Decision ( 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 )

Steve Cantwell vs Cyrille Diabate

My Pick: Cyrille Diabate via Unanimous Decision (Bonus: Expect Cantwell to be Cut following the Loss)

Results: Cyrille Diabate via Unanimous Decision ( 30-27, 30-25, 30-26 )

Thiago Tavares vs Shane Roller

My Pick: Shane Roller via TKO (Bonus: 3rd Round Ground and Pound)

Result: Shane Roller via Knockout

Rousimar Palhares vs David Branch

My Pick: Rousimar Palhares via Submission (Bonus: Guillotine or Leg Lock)

Result: Rousimar Palhares via Submission (Kneebar)

Strikeforce: Fedor vs Silva Predictions and Results

This February Even takes place in New Jersey and features the opening round of the Strikeforce
Heavyweight Grand Prix

Fedor Emelianenko vs Antonio Silva

The Main Event will feature the Last Emperor against Bigfoot. After a shocking upset by Fabricio Werdum, Fedor gets back to action against 15-2 Silva. This looks like an easy upset for Fedor, but, we will get to see for the first time how an undefeated phenom rebounds from his first loss.

In every aspect of the game, Emelianenko is the better fighter. He has years of experience over his opponent and a laundry list of the greatest fighters in the world (or at least at the time they were). This fight will be a warm-up fight for the Russian as he will use his superior striking and grappling skills to pick the Brazilian apart before taking him down and taking home the victory.

My Pick: Emelianenko via Whatever He Wants. Likely First Round TKO.

Actual Result: Silva via TKO (Doctor Stoppage)

Andrei Arlovski vs Sergei Kharitonov

Arlovski is coming off 3 straight losses and hasn’t been the same fighter since his bout with Emelianenko. That loss sent a once promising Heavyweight into a downward spiral to the depths of nowheres-ville. Across the cage will stand Kharitonov, a Russian kickboxer with notable victories over current Strikeforce Champion Alistair Overeem, Pedro Rizzo and Semmy Schilt.
Kharitonov is a strong and tall (6’4”) fighter who has displayed an ability to dispatch high-level kickboxers. Arlovski, is no high-level kickboxer.

I see this fight as another opportunity for Arlovski to let us down and ultimately a chance to retire.

My Pick: Kharitonov via KO

Actual Result: Kharitonov via KO

Thanks for reading everyone and good luck with your bets! Enjoy the Fights and Drink Responsibly!

UFC 127 Predictions and Results

UFC 127: Penn v Fitch

Here is a breakdown of my picks for the upcoming UFC event, live from Sidney, Australia.

Main Event: BJ 'The Prodigy' Penn vs Jon Fitch

This is an interesting fight to predict, on one hand you have Jon Fitch - a pretty consistent and tough wrestler, willing to take punishment to grind out hard fought decision. On the other hand you have maybe the most inconsistent fighter in the UFC: BJ Penn, who most recently knocked out long-time welterweight Champion Matt Hughes.

For BJ Penn, training and commitment has been the most difficult challenge to overcome, and that is something his opponent (Fitch) doesn't mess around with. BJ Penn is 1-2 in his last three fights with two losses to current Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. Most oddsmakers have Penn as a slight underdog in this fight against the bigger, stronger wrestler.
BJ Penn (16-7-1) is a world class jiu jitsu ace (6 MMA submission victories and first non-Brazilian to win the black-belt division at the World Jiu Jitsu Championship) and one of the most accurate strikers - landing 51% of attempted strikes. Along with that, Penn is one of the most elusive fighters in the world, avoiding over 60% of attempted strikes. However, it will be his takedown defense that will serve him best in this fight, a skill which at the moment is second to none (stopping 80% of takedown attempts).

Jon Fitch (25-3-0-1) on the other hand is a tough wrestler and one of the top Pound-For-Pound fighters in the world, able to beat anybody in the world that isn't named Georges St. Pierre. One of the best wrestlers in MMA, Fitch has landed 56% of takedowns. This may seem like a low-number, but 48 is the number of successful takedowns he has landed; and that is not a small number. Barring his loss to the current Welterweight Champion, Fitch has gone undefeated since December of 2002. On the ground, Fitch is no slouch successfully passing guard and transitioning to dominant positions 40 times, while Penn is a submission expert and lethal off his back with the Rubber Guard and an arsenal of sweeps.

Don't count on this being fight of the night as Jon Fitch grinds out a 3 round snorefest against the former Prodigy, BJ Penn. With a win at UFC 127, it will be a long but worthwhile wait for St. Pierre to defeat Jake Shields and Anderson Silva before getting another chance at the most dominant welterweight in UFC history.

On a side note: I hope Penn will win this fight, but don't expect him too.

My Pick: Fitch via Decision

Result: Majority Draw

Michael Bisping vs Jorge Rivera

The Count is notorious for being able to take out everyone BUT the top competition, and as much as I like Jorge Rivera, he is not top competition. Bisping is coming off back-to-back wins over Dan Miller and Yoshihiro Akiyama, while Rivera is on a 3 fight win-streak against considerably less impressive competition.

In my opinion, this matchup shows the UFC needing to find a place for these two middleweights, and really running out of options. Bisping is just on another level (not a top level) and I think his ability to stick and move will make all the difference against the hard-hitting Rivera. However, while Bisping will have a considerable advantage as a technical striker, it would only take one right hand for Rivera to end this fight. The Puerto Rican (Rivera) has 13 knockout wins and a powerful finishing flurry.

If Michael Bisping can be elusive and avoid a repeat of his Dan Henderson fight, he will easily win the 3 rounds.

My Pick: Bisping via Decision

Result: Michael Bisping via TKO

George Sotiropoulos vs Denis Siver

Up-and-comer G-Sots faces a dangerous and hard-hitting veteran Denis Siver. This fight will be a huge opportunity for both fighters to propel themselves into title contention.

Sotiropoulos is perhaps the most dominant lightweight in the UFC today having won 9 straight UFC fights, and losing only twice in controversial fashion. G-Sots has proved to not only be a jiu jitsu ace, but have very competent stand-up skills to compliment them. Siver, is more one-dimensional with incredible and flashy stand-up, though not completely incompetent jiu-jitsu.

If the fight goes to the ground, Sotiropoulos will have the definite advantage while Siver should control the stand-uip. If Siver can avoid the takedown I see him landing a flush punch and dropping the Australian native before a ground and pound stoppage. With that being said G-Sots could wrap up a submission while the fight goes from stand-up to the ground.

My Pick: Siver via TKO

Result: Dennis Siver via Unanimous Decision

Chris Lytle vs Brian Ebersole

Chris Lytle is one of the most seasoned veterans in the UFC and known as a tough boxer and well-rounded ground fighter. He has won his last 4 fights, most recently over former champion Matt Serra. As good of a boxer as Lytle is, he has gone .500 in his recent winning streak with submission : unanimous decision victories. He is a boxing specialist who may be more useful on the ground than he is standing up.

Brian Ebersole is not new to the MMA game either with over 60 fights and is also riding a win streak ( 7 fights ) with his highest profile fight coming against former UFC welterweight champion Carlos Newton. Ebersole has fought for many organizations including Strikeforce and the now defunct IFL.

The difference in this fight may be one of fighting commitment. While Chris Lytle is a full-time fighter, Ebersole is primarily a coach, supplementing his income with proffesional competition. This may be the most evenly matched fight on the card. Matching two veteran, well-rounded fighters, neither ever having been knocked-out. Lytle has spent his training camp preparing for Carlos Condit, and Ebersole is taking this fight on short notice.

Though both fighters are extremely-well rounded, I believe that Chris Lytle has fought a higher-calibur of opponent over the years and performed better against them. With a win in this match Chris Lytle will be one-step closer to a title shot, but no closer to winning it against the current Champion. If the UFC makes the right move after GSP moves to middleweight by opening a Welterweight Grand Prix, expect to see Chris Lytle in the running.

My Pick: Chris Lytle via submission (Bonus: Fight of the Night / Submission of the Night)

Result: Brian Ebersole via Unanimous Decision

Undercard LOCKS!

Here you can make a little extra money on some of the non-televised fights.

James Te Huna vs Alexander Gustafsson

My Pick: Alexander Gustafsson via TKO (Bonus: last 3rd of the 1st Round Finish)

Result: Alexander Gustafsson via submission

Mark Hunt vs Chris Tuchscherer

My Pick: Chris Tuchscherer via TKO

Result: Mark Hunt via KO

Tiequan Zhang vs Jason Reinhardt

My Pick: Tiequan Zhang via submission

Result: Tiequan Zhang via submission
