Recent news in MMA's premier organization has been a little slow lately, but here is an overview of what's going on in the UFC...
Wanderlei Silva vs Chris Leben
Scheduled for UFC 132's Main Card, famous sluggers Wanderlei Silva and Chris Leben will meet in the Octagon in what is sure to be a war.
Known for their reckless abandonment and disregard for their own well-being, Silva and Leben have been fan favorites for years now. However, their success levels in recent years have been very contrasted.
Chris Leben has had a terrific run in recent years and though coming off a loss to Brian Stann, expect to see the Team Quest alum back on trck and ready for one of his most high-profile fights to date. Silva on the other hand has failed to find the success in the UFC that he had in PrideFC. Though still a fan favourite, the brawling style hasn't earned him the victories he has been looking for.
Expect to see Leben take this one in what is sure to be the 'Fight of the Year.'
'Daddy' Drops Weight
Former title challenger Joe 'Daddy' Stevenson is make the move to Featherweight. After 3 failed outtings in the UFC's 155 lbs Lightweight division, and perhaps moreso to avoid being released, Stevenson will be making the drop to 145 lbs. A winner of the Ultimate Fighter and former top contender, Stevenson has recently had a serious drop in performance.
The TUF competitor will face Javier Vasquez at the upcoming UFC on Versus 4 and if he can't take home a victory, expect to see the last of the once promising contender.
'Mayhem' Stirs the Pot
Known for his wild personality and dyed hair, MTV's Bully Beatdown host Jason 'Mayhem' Miller is looking to get back into the cage. His last fight, a victory over aging Japanese superstar Kazushi Sakuraba, was way back in September of 2010 and the former Strikeforce title challenger appears eager to get back to action.
In a recent interview with MMAFIGHTING.com's ARIEL HELWANI, Miller expressed a desire to face some of the top contenders in the UFC's Middleweight division. Calling out the likes of Chael Sonnen whome he referred to as a 'Republitard' and Michael Bisping, dubbed by Miller 'The Limey.'
It wouldn't be Miler's first chance on MMA's grandest stage. In 2005, Miller made a startling move to Welterweight in order to face now Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, a match that Miller did not win.
fan favorite in his own right, Miller could seriously use the UFC's hype machine to drive himself into superstardom. Between his personality and amazing talent as a fighter, the future for 'Mayhem' only looks bright.
Almeida Retires...Again
UFC veteran and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu wizard, Ricardo 'Big Dog' Almeida is calling it quits, for the last time. After a 1-2 stint in the UFC's Welterweight division, Almeida has decided to move on to other things. While voicing his desire to remain a part of Mixed Martial Arts, Almeida has opened his own school (a branch of Renzo Gracie Academy) and has family obligations that he feels have been placed on the back-burner for two long. Wishing to retire on his own terms and in good rapport with the UFC, Almeida will hang his gloves up for good.
Dean of Mean is Back
After an unfortunate release from MMA's premier organization, Keith Jardine will be stepping back under the bright lights of the Zuffa promotion (parent company of the UFC). It may be a tougher test than any before though. Strikeforce light heavyweight, Mike Kyle has recently withdrawn from a fight due to a broken hand suffered in training. His opponent for that fight, Gegard Mousasi.
One of the world's best light heavyweight fighters, Mousasi has defeated a laundry list of the world's top combat sports athletes. Coming in on short notice and in the twilight of your career won't favor Jardine either. Expect to see Mousasi get the knock out on Jardine.
br>Actually no, expect nothing, these are two of the most unpredictable fighters in the world today.
That's all for this week's UFC News. Stay tuned for the predictions for UFC 129: St. Piere vs Shields in the coming days.
